Court Mediation Program Reaches 20,000 Case Milestone!

Today’s post is provided by guest blogger Monique Steensma who provides an excellent reason to celebrate – read on!

On July 11, 2012 Mediate BC’s Court Mediation Program (CMP) hit a major milestone—the 20,000th case was referred to us since 1998! We have come a long way in 14 years, and case number 20,000 seems an appropriate time to recognize our accomplishments and thank the staff, mediators, mentors and other supporters who have brought us this far.

The CMP team skillfully shepherds the cases through the program no matter what snags arise. Program Manager Angela Mallard has been with the CMP for the vast majority of those 20,000 cases, and incoming Acting Program Manager Monique Steensma is trying to quickly learn the ropes before Angela’s imminent maternity leave. Mediation Consultant Yuki Matsuno and staff members Janette Cardona, Julie Geremia and Leah Ranada round out the team. It is their knowledge and experience that keep us running smoothly behind the scenes. On the front lines, our 49 Small Claims Mediators maintain our reputation for delivering excellent mediation services and our 17 Mentors have guided 678 newly trained mediators through our Small Claims Practicum.

As we take a brief moment to rest on our laurels, we know there is still much to be done. Our staff, mentors and mediators have a great breadth and depth of expertise in dispute resolution, efficient process and administration, and professional development. We continually look for the best ways to contribute in the effort to help parties get to early, cost-efficient and collaborative resolution of their disputes.

Monique Steensma is a mediator and conflict management specialist.  She is assuming the role of Acting Program Manager of Mediate BC’s Court Mediation Program during Angela Mallard’s maternity leave.

  1. The numbers are truly impressive. Many thanks also for the amazing opportunity offered to 10 full practicum classes of UBC Law students to gain experience in mediation in such a wonderful learning environment!

    Congratulations to the entire team!
